This is a directory concerned mainly with written word games, as these are the most popular types of interactive game on the web, such as scrabble and hangman versions which often appear under disguised names. In fact, we have yet to find a verbal interactive game - though surely this is only a matter of time with today's technology and multi-media level of home computers. We have included one link to a site about one of the most favourite radio shows of all time, 'Just A minute' - a panel word game - which can be heard online from the BBCs web sites and various other radio stations around the world such as ABC (The national Australian brodcaster). As most word games tend to appear as just one offering on a game site, we have also included what might be loosely termed 'word game resources' also..
| Site Title and Rank |
Description |
Dictionary.com |
An excellent free resource for the speedy looking up definitions. In addition this site provides simple online word puzzles, a phrase translation facility (from English into most major languages and vice versa), a medical dictionary, grammar and structure guides and quite a bit more! Well worth checking out, we judge. |
Anagram Server |
An exceptional free resource for wordsmiths everywhere looking for that helpful shortcut. You can enter words or letters and find all possible anagrams - and not only in English but a dozen other major languages also as well as Latin. Parameters can be added in the advanced section to include or exclude words, choose to restrict multiple occurrences etc. This is an extremely powerful tool for research, cheating at scrabble and similar games or just for fun. |
Pogo Games |
Pogo Games is from EA Games and, as you would therefore expect, is an extremely professional and competent site - with especially good java implementations. It contains many dozens of different games some of which are free to all comers, others require you to become a subscribed member. Membership is monthly or yearly. The different types of game are categorised as follows: Card & Board, Word, Solitaire, Puzzle, Casual Sports, Sports & Arcade and Token Casino. Players gain jackpot spins when they win a game which provides them with the chance to win Pogo Tokens or, very, very occasionally, a cash prize up to $5000. The most popular games offered are the very addictive Poppit, also Pop Fu, Dice City Roller, Lottso! and PoppaZoppa. The major word games on Pogo are: QWERTY, Word Whomp, Word Whomp Crackdown, Scrabble Blast and Crossword plus a few others including a brand new version of the classic hangman which we are still yet to evaluate. |
Just A Minute |
The BBC radio 4 home of the panel word game Just A Minute. Listen here live during broadcasts or 'Listen Again' to the latest show up to 7 days after it was broadcast during the season. |
Just A Minute |
A fan site for the BBC radio 4 programme Just A Minute. Scarily complete and up-to-date. Full episode listings, including partcipants and, in many cases, transcripts plus other show-related info and Blogs. The only reason it doesn't get full marks is there are no references as to where episode recordings may be downloaded from - Online Games network recommends you search winMX for MP3s of same. |
Yahoo! |
Jack-of-all-trades but master of none, the Yahoo games section still deserves to be mentioned. It does have reasonable implementations of many games (such as scrabble, literatii and backgammon, various card games and many others). It is free and the site is extremely popular and consequently suffers from all the frustrations that go along with that scenario. If two of you are looking for a quiet game of something then using a private table at Yahoo can be an easy answer. |
