This is a list of resources to help you play MUDS or to provide MUDS for others to play. To connect to MUDS you must use an internet protocol called Telent. Telnet clients are the most basic form of interactive software and are wholly inappropriate for playing anything but the most simple MUDS. Over the years MUD players have developed software or 'MUD clients' with enhanced features to further their enjoyment. Use of such MUD clients is generally considered essential by players to get the most out of their MUD playing time. Many MUDS provide java clients for immediate access for the beginner, but most serious players will progress to the use of a MUD client sooner or later. Here we review some of the better offerings and attempt to list at least one MUD client for all types of computer. Trying a few different clients (where possible) is recommended because once you start setting up macros etc, changing client later becomes a major undertaking. In addition we will maintain a list of the best sites that provide for the hosting of MUDS or make MUD code available as well as sites that provide resources that are useful for RPGs as well as MUDs.

Description |
AvPlay - Windows Mud Client
 |
AvPlay was one of the first fully featured
MUD clients for Windows and is FREE. It is simple to use, and offers
most features a player requires of a client. Originally developed
for use with Avalon, it has special 'Avalon interactive' features
for use with that game but these features can be turned off and AvPlay
will work with all MUDS. Its main drawbacks are that it does not support
ANSI color and can be quirky on installation unless setup is run after
a clean re-boot of your PC. It works with all versions of Windows
from 3.1 through to the latest version. For genuine novices this client
is perfect in its ease of use with the added bonus of more dynamic
features available for the more experienced. |
RoAclient - Windows Mud Client
 |
RoAclient is extremely competent
software amongst MUD clients. It allows for aliases, macros, hotkeys, triggers and
fully customisable ANSI color. This program's main drawback can be
one of its strongest features. Where most clients that allow for inbedded
variables, wildcards and various other features this program does
so with the added bonus of being exceedingly fast. However, perhaps
the main reason for this speed is that the bells and whistles of creating
complicated settings have been dropped. Instead, you are closer to
the actual code of the client. This should not discourage the genuine
novice: using this client may not be spelled out for you but all of
the settings can be created and edited without having to worry about
learning a programming language, it is only when delving much deeper
that this becomes an issue. There is an online manual that is more
than sufficient however and for a little extra effort you can achieve
more than you can with most paid for clients. |
SimpleMU - Windows Mud Client
 |
Originally designed for use with MOOs
this client can now be used for MUDS and MUCKS as well. It is a little
on the clunky side but for those of you who want simple, easy to use
features and slick ANSI color, this client does extremely well. It
is one of the few clients available with a spellchecker, thesaurus
and a long list of features that make playing interactive text games
a lot more enjoyable and easy. The designers have allowed a thirty
day trial period and stress that you should buy it once it has expired.
You are still able to use it once the evaluation period has finished
but most of the features will not be available to you until you register
your version. |
Zmud - Windows Mud Client
 |
ZMud is a premier Winsock MUD client
for Windows. This technically sophisticated GUI client supports multiple character
windows (multiplaying), aliases, triggers with complex pattern matching,
macro keys, variables, speedwalking, graphical buttons, extensive
built-in and user-defined functions, ANSI color, word wrapping, alarms,
and online help. It is fully customizeable and 90% compatible with
TinTin++ MUD clients. The coding potential is almost infinite so you are
not restricted in any way, unless of course you are simply looking to play a MUD rather than code a client!
If you are looking for a fast launch novice friendly client then this is not for you.
It will take some time to navigate through all the options available to you, to find what you really
want to do, even if it is the simplist of settings. The software operates
on a thirty day evaluation period and will become unusable thereafter.
However, once you have purchased your registration, upgrades and new
versions are free for life, which is handy as not all versions are stable. Be sure to keep a back up of your macro file! |
Rapscallion - Mac Mud Client
 |
In the past Mac clients have been extremely
limited in what they offer. Rapscallion is a relatively new MUD client
for the Macintosh. It boasts a wide range of features, including ANSI
color and styling, triggers, gags, multi-threaded aliases, channels,
journeying and others. Anyone serious about playing Muds who uses
a Mac should consider this client a solid choice. |
KMud - Unix Mud Client
 |
Kmud is a free graphical mud client
for Unix/X11 especially for the KDE Desktop Environment. Features
up to now: connection wizard/profiles, aliases, triggers, logging,
ansi/vt100 support, input history (with auto complete), auto reconnect,
delimited input for entering several commands, connection timer, alternative
input line, configurable font/color-settings, splitscreen when in
scrollback, mccp support, output notfication, multiline input, numpad-walking,
speed-walking and the more basic features that you would expect from
a client. |
TinyFugue - Unix Mud Client
 |
TinyFugue has been the leader
in MUD clients on Unix based operating systems for years. It
is free to use and it still remains by far the best. TFdoes not require
the KDE desktop environment to use it. With all the basic features
available and perhaps the most comprehensive help available for any
client within the software it will remain difficult to beat for years
to come. However, the prospect of learning how to use this client
effectively is often daunting to many novices and even the most basic
settings require you to delve into the help files from the word go.
With this, though, comes a flexibility that simply isn't available
in even the most comprehensive cilents on the more popular operating
systems. |
AvPlay - DOS Mud Client
 |
A serial/modem link client for DOS that
may also be used with certain types of dial-up internet accounts. Fully
functional, stable and well designed should you require what is now a
fairly specialised form of access. |
Autorealm downloads |
Autorealm is a mapping utility that should not be over-looked by those considering designing their own RPG or MUD realm. It is free and can be downloaded here. While it may not be useful to all, we strongly recommend checking out this resource. A little time invested may turn out to be invaluable to the MUD designer down the road. |
RPG Host |
Role-playing games, archives, programs, maps, adventures, contests, hosting, and more! A long running website dedicated to collating a full list of RPGS and supporting tools. It is easy to navigate and offers a large directory which varies in quality but covers virtually allgenres. RPG Host is constantly updated and offers over 1000 downloadable resources. |
