Avalon, Role Playing Game World

First Age, Dawn Of Civilization

Welcome to the Online Games Network's MMORPG Chart. The term MMORPG (massively multiplayer online roleplaying games), is a little misleading. These games are, in effect, no different in game terms from online multiuser games of old. The primary difference is in the potential number of players a game can accommodate. Often, graphical RPGs used to be limited (to somewhere around 32 players) due to the network load graphics would place on servers (Starsiege Tribes is one such example). The term MMORPG sprang up when this barrier was broken and the RPGs of today were born; where thousands of players all share a consistent role playing world. You might be surprised to hear that many text based MMORPGs existed long before the corporate games world entered the fray with their graphical offerings. The better quality Muds for example, have had a virtually unlimited potential playerbase since the early nineties and so, strictly speaking, have been merrily existing as MMORPGs for years.

This section then, makes no distinction between corporate, graphical or text MMORPGs. Those listed here are quite simply the best we were able to find on the internet today, regardless. Rest assured, they are tried and tested. These links are the more imaginative MMORPGs from a variety of game genre and more often than not, are the more successful candidates from the glut of MMORPGs around.

Site Title and Rank Description
Avalon; The Legend Lives

Editor's Choice - MMORPG Award

This site is an example of the type of high quality text based MMORPGs mentioned above. It is a beautifully written world of enormous depth and complexity and has undergone enormous expansion to its game system in recent months. With a growing playerbase and major coding rehauls, it is one of the few commercial text-based games around which has managed to leap the RPG to MMORPG hurdle. This is purely down to its quality of writing and intelligent game design.

Avalon is totally original in its conception and has one of the most complex and brutal player versus player combat systems there is whilst still offering a complex economics system and 'Pacifists life-choice' for those who are not interested in combat and want to purely role play. Indeed, many of the games you are used to playing will have been based on the complex interaction between 'fighters' and 'non-combatants' which Avalon caters for. On the one hand you have those fighting toe-to-toe and on the other you have pacifists scheming and politicing behind the scenes. It is a game which set the standards for real time games play and deserves the illustrious title of the Online Games Network's Favourite MMORPG Award.

Avalon provides an expansive web site for additional help plus detailed history of the land. There is also an advanced Java client for immediate play and an in depth introduction for those who haven't played either Avalon or MMORPGs before. If you are experienced with the this type of game then you should be able to fly through the introduction quickly but if you aren't, you will be given plenty of time and help to learn your way around.

The Avalon Manual

EVE Trinity

One has to hand it to the makers of EVE. It is truly a massive game system. Though, truth be told, that is about all one has to hand to them. EVE is a step in the right direction as far as graphical MMORPGs are concerned. It boasts reasonable graphics and one can modify and buy new ships until the cows come home. There are literally thousands of permutations available for choosing both race and type of ship one will fly in. Unfortunately however, the complex statistical system available for players to puzzle through and get to grips with is utterly ruined by the unimaginative administration. As is prone to happen from time to time in all competitive MMORPGs, one race has totally dominated the game but where EVE has gone wrong is in that the race has been allowed to bully all 90 thousand other users to the point of slavery. Fascinating though this is to see from an outside perspective, it does rather ruin the game environment for new players. An invented story-line 'leveling' of the playing field by the admin would greatly improve Eve Online.

EVE Online description: "EVE takes place in a cluster of stars far from mankind's original habitat, planet Earth. How far away, and whether or not that cradle of civilization still exists, is a mystery. Humans arrived through a natural wormhole and, gazing up upon an alien sky they had never seen, were completely unable to determine where this new world was located. From the New Eden solar system, where the gate of EVE once led to the old world, humans expanded in all directions at a furious pace, exploring and colonizing rapidly...."

First Age
After the apocalytptic divine war, the continent of Avalon is bathed in a new dawn where you the mortal can play a major role. This is the original format of the classic Avalon role playing game before civilization evolved and removed the rough edges. Expect blood and gore once you are through the initial new player support and you had better be on your mettle. First Age is free to play and provides a java client for immediate play from your browser.
Pirates of the Burning Sea
The much hyped pirate game from Flying Lab Software, the makers of Rails Across America. Be warned, in order to play this MMORPG you will need to buy a CD of the game and register to play with their central servers. Having been present on January the 7th for the 'Pre-Boarding Party' there is a lot of potential for this game to fill a niche which has long been begging to be filled. The graphics of the game are passable, the CCC/NPC (Computer Controlled Character/Non Player Characters) sound as though they will make use of some good AI technology and both the player-versus-player sea battles and land battles seem as though they could be well designed and executed. More to come on this game over the coming weeks. If it doesn't live up to expectations then you should expect to see this entry removed. The hype has to be fulfilled and quality is all that matters, no matter what the budget of the developers! We all know what big budgets and corporate shareholder meetings can do to MMORPGs, don't we? If not, read this entry about World of Warcraft Spying on Players
Armageddon
A Role playing MUD game based in the harsh climate of the desert planet known as Zalanthas, where, curiously, a number of different character 'classes' can be found such as elves as well as humans. Although this is a MUD environment the emphasis is very much on role playing and out of character actions can be penalised heavily. One of the things this means is that before you play you must submit a character description and 'history' by e-mail which will be vetted and either accepted or rejected. Once your character is killed in this game then it is gone for good and you must create a new one, but you must NOT use information gained by previous characters to advance your next character. Such cases of abuse along with a number of others are judged 'The Staff'. The very fact that this online RPG has been around for over a decade tells you that some very dedicated people are involved in running and playing play this game. Previous mudding and role playing experience is recommended as well as a competent MUD client.
Kojin, the Soul of Samurai
Set in the Sengoku period of Japan, otherwise known as the Warring States period, Kojin is by far the most ambitious RPG project out there. You can play any kind of samurai, ninja, warlord... even a geisha (a type of prostitute)! It sets no limits to what you can do and is extremely addictive to play.
Agamemnon, Kings of England Online Adventure Game
At the time of writing this wonderful retelling of England's history in the form of a text-based MMORPG is still under development. Not the prettiest of websites but from what we've seen they are putting all their efforts into game development first. The descriptions of England have been painstakingly created to render the atmosphere of medieval England in a caring fashion often overlooked these days. Pop by and see if you're one of the lucky few to grab a beta account.

Tabula Rasa

Richard Garriott's Tabula Rasa is an MMORPG from NCsoft, designed in part by some of the creators of Ultima Online including Richard Garriott. The game blends certain 'first person shooter' aspects of more traditional games into the combat system of an MMORPG. It was officially released to retail on November 2, 2007, allowing customers who pre-ordered the game to access the shared servers on October 30, 2007. The game requires an ongoing monthly subscription.

The MMORPG game system will include the ability for players to influence the outcome of a war between the player characters and the NPCs.

Tabula Rasa is about humanity's last stand against an alien race called "The Bane". The story takes place in the near future on two or three planets, which will be in a state of constant conflict between the AFS (Allied Free Sentients) and The Bane.

For those interested, Tabula rasa (Latin: scraped tablet or clean slate) refers to the epistemological thesis that individual human beings are born with no innate or built-in mental content, in a word, "blank", and that their entire resource of knowledge is built up gradually from their experiences and sensory perceptions of the outside world.

Age of the Throne
The dramatic backdrop of 17th Century Paris, in the time of King Louis XIII, The Kings Musketeers and Cardinal Richelieu provides the setting for this text based role playing domain. A refreshingly unique scenario. A java MUD console is provided for immediate play from your browser without the need for downloads. Now a relatively well established MUD.
Elysium
A custom built role playing fantasy environment which is ambitious and still in beta stage development. The backdrop spans across three continents and provides politicial plots and battles that rival even the best. It has a wide range of class selections and skills to choose from. It is novice friendly but experienced mudders will find many of the skills lacking complete originality. If you want to start afresh in a new world then this is for you. Those wishing to find a taste of something totally new should look at the higher rated role playing games listed above. This game does offers a deeply immersive role playing environment that many other's have yet to achieve.
